The Book of Deacon by Joseph R. Lallo is currently free on Amazon Kindle. This is the first in the trilogy, and giving it away is an ingenious way to get readers hooked, because if you are like me, you will be. There are also two side stories that revolve around supporting characters from the Book of Deacon series. At first, I was having a hard time getting into the story. In the beginning, her life as a wandering pariah because of her open protest of the ongoing war really turned me off. I have a hard time enjoying a book where people are suffering endlessly. However, there was something about the writing that kept me reading. After Myranda follows a malthrope, an animal like sentient being, into a cave that delivers them into a hidden clearing where magic is practiced and taught, I was hooked. The author has a unique spin on how magic works and I found myself looking forward to reading more. And, there is so much more to this story than meets the eye. A small dragon named Myn bonds with Myranda and becomes her constant companion, and their are others interested in our heroine. Myranda turns out to be somewhat of a prodigy, and is determined to find a way to end the war back home. Myranda is an interesting and extremely likable character. She is a smart capable woman who has survived on her own for years. She becomes quite powerful and yet is still humble and completely determined to do what is right and somehow end the war. The characters' development are well done and realistic. The so called "good characters" have their own downfalls, and the antagonists have their redeeming qualities, furthering the reality that nothing is ever black and white, but shades of gray. Although I was initially hoping for a romantic relationship developing, I am now glad our heroine gave herself completely to the learning of magic instead of a cute boy. Myranda focuses on bettering herself and the world around her first and foremost; an admirable quality. That being said, I wouldn't rule out a romance developing later in the trilogy. However, the story is in no way lacking without the usual love story woven in. Her decision to leave the community of learning and magic happened all too soon for me, but the end of this book is only the beginning of her journey, and I can't wait to read more! |
